BRAZIER EKOCYCLE RUNNER
version 1.0. small production run, limited supply.
BER is a high-performance, classic running shoe that is the result of a collaboration between The People’s MOVMT and Brendan Brazier.
It is the first truly functional training shoe that is made from post-consumer waste, and upcycled plastic-bottles.
Brazier, a former professional Ironman triathlete, turned social entrepreneur, created the shoe to stand up to the demands of high-mileage training, while dramatically reducing the strain that conventional shoe production places on the environment. Having fabricated the shoe largely out of what was once considered waste material, the result is a reduction in plastic destine for landfills and disposed of in our oceans. Among the material used is Ekocycle. The product of a partnership between will.i.am and Coco-Cola, Ekocycle, is a durable material that’s made from upcycled plastic, that was once Coca-Cola bottles.
The shoes are also entirely vegan, meaning they don’t contain any animal products such as leather or suede. Nor are the glues used of animal-origin, which is uncommon in the shoe industry.
“Once I learned of the considerable demand placed on natural resources to produce conventional running shoes, I knew there had to be a better way. Why did we need to consume a nonrenewable resource to produce more plastic? And why did we need to take up arable land to grow material to build shoes, when there are millions of tons of discarded plastic bottles in landfills and oceans that could be repurposed? The BER is our attempt to help create a more sustainable shoe industry, while not compromising shoe performance or durability.”
